Effectiveness of Online Distance Education Introduced due to COVID-19 by Secondary School Students’ Point of View
Abstract
Teachers in the 21st century must face significant challenges as they have to teach a generation that was born and socialized in the digital era. Regarding netgeneration, not only their behaviour in the online space has changed, but also their learning methods, their way of thinking, and their brain activities. In the middle of March 2020, school closure and the introduction of online education due to COVID-19 tore in this situation. The research, which was conducted with a digital self-administered questionnaire among secondary school students in May 2020, surveyed how adolescents handles this period and how they could meet the requirements. The research results showed that gen Z did not enjoy online learning. Although they could do their school tasks and keep the suitable contact with their teachers, neither their concentration, nor their academic result increased significantly. Moreover, they rather suffered form the lack of offline peer contacts. It is a remarkable result that traditional protective factors, such as academic result and parents’ qualification, did not prove to be protective factors in online education.
